As a Storage Consultant, I spend a lot of time examining disk subsystems and storage networks. All of these pieces of equipment consume resources, some more than others. Picking “green” products is an important part of the datacentre build process; more equipment is being shoe horned into smaller, more compact footprints.

I see two challenges:

  1. To seek out, highlight and document the most “carbon effective” storage products. By that I mean those which consume the least resources for the best technical return – a low powered hard disk, a storage switch which runs cool and therefore needs less power, and so on. This also includes where possible, understanding the manufacturing process and its impact on the environment.
  2. Ensuring that I work as efficiently as possible and attempt to meet a carbon neutral footprint in my professional work. Exactly what this means, I need to define and develop.

Over the coming weeks, I hope to expand on my thoughts and develop some methods to meet my goals.

Feel free to comment, it will be most welcome.
