There are some very obvious things that can be done to reduce my emissions. Here are a few I think may work:

  • Working from home
  • Use public transport rather than drive
  • Use a laptop rather than a PC
  • Virtualise all my “testing” servers to a single unit

It’s a fairly weak list. I suppose the problem with this is I’ve only just thought of a few things I do in my normal day. I need to keep an eco-diary for a week or so and analyse the results. After that, comes measurement. I need to estimate what I use. I have some ideas already here. I have an electricity monitor; plug it into the mains and my PC into it and I can measure the electricity draw. I’ve already tried it out. Everyone claims mobile phone chargers should be switched off when not in use. My phone charger draws no current when not charging my phone, countering popular belief. On top of electricity usage, I know how much CO2 my car emits – I get charged tax on that basis. I can easily find out rail and air costs.

So I have a basis. I’ll keep the diary and start measuring things with my electric meter.
